INDIE BAND OF THE WEEK – DEAD HORSE TRAUMA

Who are you and what is your role in the band?

Hello! My names Garrett Dewald. I play drums in Dead Horse Trauma.

How did the band get started?

As the most recent member I can only speak on what I’ve experienced. I was contacted by a local friend who informed me Dead Horse Trauma needed a drummer. Without hesitation I sent in a audition video followed by 14 others. Two weeks from then I was in Des Moines trying out and preparing for a 30 day tour. We’ve made some serious changes since I’ve been in. With a new album out and an entirely different rhythm section from different sides of the country, you can surely hear the newer chemistry.

Who are your influences and how do they play a role in your sound?

My influences are very diverse. I’ve always appreciated groove over anything so heavier bands like Sevendust, lamb of god, and periphery helped me deliver my intensity in the pocket of a really groove riff. I also listen to a ton of blues and funk. It’s not uncommon for me to play hours of just that, which has created sensitivity and dynamics that arnt always found in our genre.

What has been your most meaningful experience being in this band so far?

I’ve had so many heart felt moments in this band already. One of the biggest was seeing a sold out show in our home town on my first tour and people from every surrounding state with a line out the door and around the building just for us! Hearing how the music has impacted people’s lives and how much they appreciate us for being who we are and just authentically supporting what we do. It’s amazing. Next to that I just find deep gratitude in knowing this is just the beginning and so so much more of that to come. Memories are always a fun topic. So many to choose from.

Favorite memory from a show you’ve played or a place you’ve travelled?

Can’t pick a favorite but for me it’s all about nature and experience! The mountains in Colorado, the Grand Canyon and all the land scape on the west coast. Really makes you feel alive. A lot of the specifics in memories are going to have to stay exclusive with us! Come to a show to see for yourselves!

What do you hope to accomplish with your music?

Truly my mission in music is to connect to people. And we do. I want to be the generation of “rockstar ” that people relate to, like, can call family and will be there as a role model for the next generation. I pour my everything into every performance in hopes to inspire LIFE in anyone who is watching. I want to wake the waking dead through the energy we bring. This is your life and you’re in control of how you want to create it and you deserve your happiness. Music helps deliver this message.

Something about you that no one knows?

There’s a few things people probably don’t know because it’s not too necessary to mention. I practice meditation fairly regularly. In some form everyday and more intentional time devoted few times a week.

What is next for the band?

What’s next is continuing the revolution! Making the scene inclusive. Having fun. Being independent in every way possible. We’re writing a new album currently that we’re very excited for and also embarking on our first of many European tours ever in February 2018!

Anything else you want to add?

Thank you to everyone who’s supported us up to this point and continues to show the love. As I’ve said this is only the beginning and you will all continue to get a bigger and bigger return on your investments.
