Album Review: Revenge of the Nearly Deads by The Nearly Deads

The Nearly Deads out of Nashville, TN have released their latest EP, Revenge of the Nearly Deads.  This six track EP might be small in size, but they say dynamite comes in small packages and this EP is explosive.  From crushing guitar work and vocals that remind me of another vocalist for a band that rhymes with “pale form.” The Nearly Deads have the makings of a band that could take over the world like a zombie apocalypse.

The opening track “Diamond in the Rough” tells the tale of a relationship that I cannot say went bad, but possibly a little to clingy.  The pressures of being the only one in your significant other’s life can cause even the strongest to crack and need a little breathing room.  Following up “Diamond in the Rough” is “My Evil Ways” which seems to have the right spot on this EP as we flip from being trapped in the throngs of a relationship to the care free nature of someone who might have it in them to settle down at some point in their life; but today, nor anytime soon is it going to happen. As you can see, there is a theme developing and it does not stop with the next two tracks on the EP.  With “Not Listening “and “Revenge”, which is a powerful message of a person that has had enough and is ready to take matters in their own hands and that “Revenge” is the fuel that keeps them going.  “Frequencies”, for me is kind of the culmination of the four songs prior to it on the EP.  The song, to me, is that person that has been on the emotional rollercoaster over the course of their life of love, hate, and just longing to find that special someone.  “Frequencies” is that plea to the person out there.  That one true soulmate that hopefully they can hear their cries through all the other static and nonsense in the world and someday find one another.  Closing out the Ep is the song “as Good as it Gets” and seriously every time I have listened to this song with that piano and then Theresa Jeane’s voice coming in over the top, I get goosebumps.  Such a powerful showcase of a voice that can do it all.  You have to listen to this for yourself as it is just a beautiful song full of the pain of making the hard choices in life.

To sum the whole thing up, The Nearly Deads have created Revenge of the Nearly Deads, an EP that is solid from the time you hit play until you reach that last track and have your mind blown by a voice that is one of the most talented I have heard in a long time.  Let’s not forget the band that is backing these vocals either.  To match the vocal range being projected you can’t just put some slouches back there and call it a band.  These guys are amazing and provide the canvas on which Theresa Jeane paints.  I would like to hear, and this is just my opinion, some songs with a little more grit in her voice, a little more anger.  I feel that with the sound those fellas produce with some of those riffs, some dirty vocals would really show an all-around range of their sound.  And believe me they have that range.  So pick up Revenge of the Nearly Deads, the latest EP from Nashville’s The Nearly Deads.
