Here’s a band that combines far too many influences to list: ranging from Avenged Sevenfold to The Bunny The Bear and all parts in between. Yet, they’ve managed to incorporate their varied tastes into something very unique and even we can’t quite put a label on them. But who needs labels anyway? Because quite frankly, it’s always refreshing to hear something as innovate as this quintet of headbanging Southern boys manage to be.
Ladies and gentlemen, we give you CATHERCIST!
Hailing from Gulfport, Mississippi, CATHERCIST just got off tour supporting American Head Charge and are preparing for one hell of a summer touring hard and heavy. With their album As Hope Expires charting and their current single “If Anything At All” starting to get major spin on both Sirius Octane, college and mainstream radio – 2014 is looking like it could be THE year for CATHERCIST.
We spoke to frontmant Zack Sawyer about all things CATHERCIST, including their relentless touring (past, present and future), a stage invasion of midgets a descending Stonehenge and what they’ve got up their sleeves in the future…
Hey guys! How was the tour with American Head Charge?
THAT was great. We had a blast, and we’ve all needed this small rest before we start tomorrow (April 1st) on a month-long tour with Righteous Vendetta.
Do you learn anything from American Head Charge this time around and what about the other bands that you’ve toured with?
Yes. Every band we go on the road with teaches us something. Whether they intended to or not! They were a lot of fun too. We’re going to miss those guys! (American Head Charge)
Have there been any shows that have stood out to you on that tour? What would you say makes you stand out as a live metal band?
Denver, Colorado for one! Those people know how to make you feel welcome. As for standing out as a live band, we’ve always tried to put out as much raw energy on stage as we did in the music. There’s a lot of movement. You can tell we’re having fun!
If there’s anything that touring in general has taught you, what would it be and why?
The weather isn’t just horrible at home, it’s everywhere. I’m from Mobile, Alabama and it rains here nonstop. It’s always something everywhere though...
Have there been any Spinal Tap moments on tour?
Hmmmmm. There was this crazy time in Denver, where when we were on stage, these midgets came out dancing while a tiny replica of Stonehenge descended from the ceiling. That may or may not have actually happened.
Your band name is rather unique. How did the name “Cathercist” come around?
It’s derived from the word catharsis! It means to purge yourself of emotion through music or art. We felt like that was a pretty good definition of what we bring to a live setting.
How long did it take to come up with the As Hope Expires album?
We started writing As Hope Expires about a week after our first CD came out. There were already new ideas about what we wanted to do coming to life. It took us about a year to get everything the way we wanted it before hitting the studio.
The first single you’ve released off that album was “Disconnected.” What led you to want that to be released as a single?
It was one of those songs that everyone in the band seemed to feel a special connection with. I always felt like it really showed off who we are as a group and what we are capable of.

Out of curiosity, what’s the story behind the name of your debut album The Untimely Death of Zack Sawyer?
When I first joined, we practiced two to three nights a week and I lived an hour and a half away. I made a few comments about how the gas money was killing me. Anyways, someone suggested that as an album title! We all kind of laughed it off, but when it came time to name our new record it had stuck.
What can we expect to hear from you in the future and do have anything else you want to add?
Expect more music! We’re in this for the long haul, and were just getting started! We’ll be out on tour with Righteous Vendetta and we’re really excited about that. Also, we’re playing Welcome To Rockville on April 26th, which we can’t wait to do…it’s going to be one HELL of a day! So to all our fans…thank you so much for the support and we hope to see you out on the road this summer!
If you would please Call and Request “If Anything At All” on Octane Radio! 888-3-OCTANE and your local radio stations that would be great too! We’re off to Iowa now to meet up with Righteous Vendetta and get this party started…see ya soon!
