Enigmatic, dark electro-pop one man gang A Darker Color Bright is undoubtedly one of the more gifted musicians as artists, but his ability to re-imagine music as more than mere sounds has stayed conspicuously under the radar, and it appears that he prefers to keep it that way. His newest release, a very dark instrumentation of the Harold Arlen and Yip Harburg composed “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” originally an anthem of promise from the depths of the Great Depression in the classic Wizard of Oz, has been flipped into a deeply unsettling warning against the dangers looming in our current society. Hope can quickly become hopelessness, faith becoming doubt, and this message is hammered home paired with disturbing images of human history’s legacy of violence and destruction.
