ALBUM REVIEW: KILLER BE KILLED – DEBUT ALBUM

1c0edca602dce825-Killer-Be-Killed-Killer-Be-KilledThe debut album for KILLER BE KILLED has finally landed and it is worth every second of the wait that metal fans have had to endure since the forming of this “supergroup” was announced.

The combination of these four talented and diverse musicians has resulted in a hybrid sound that I’m finding difficult to convey to you.  KILLER BE KILLED consists of Greg Puciato, Max Cavalera, Troy Sanders and Dave Elitch, all successful in previous/current bands including SOULFLY, THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN, MASTODON and THE MARS VOLTA.  The inflection of all these bands can be heard at one point or another as you listen through this 11 track debut that runs the gamut from straight up hard core metal to a little bit of thrash punk, with a few of the pieces offering up amazingly melodic choruses that are certainly very “radio friendly”. If my suspicions hold true, you will all be hearing them soon enough on you local metal stations. When all is said and done, you come away from the experience feeling like you’ve just listened to something very special indeed.

Puciato, Cavalera and Sanders take turns handling the vocal duties on the offerings, which really adds to the diversity of the sound that the band constructs.  Sanders’ bass work is nothing short of extraordinary, but his talent explodes on the tracks “Save The Robots”, “Twelve Labors” and “Forbidden Fire”, delivering bass riffs that hold the potential to lift these tracks to legendary status.

Drummer Dave Elitch is “spot on” track after track as he thunders his way through the band’s debut, and combines with Sanders to create a wall of sound that will damn near blow the headphones right off your head.

Through it all, Puciato and Cavalera trade guitar responsibilities and offer up solid performances. Make no mistake – the emphasis here is on the searing vocals and the incredibly solid back-beat highlighted on every track – as they should be. This is some of the most impressive musicianship I have been privileged to play through my speakers in quite a while!

Debuts can be a funny things. Often times the band’s identity can get lost in the search for popularity, but that could not be further from the truth in this case. KILLER BE KILLED know exactly who they are, and with this line up they are at the top of their game and primed to slam us all like a freight train with no brakes.

The self-titled debut album streets on May 13th and I cannot stress enough that you need to get your hands on this one as quickly as humanly possible.  We are all going to be talking about this one for years to come.
