Steel Panther made their headlining debut in Birmingham, Alabama, on May 29th.
Starting off the night was Nashville band True Villains, who successfully blended Classic and Southern Rock with a small taste of metal. They sounded great, but felt slightly out of place on the tour, as they seemed to take themselves the most seriously. That is definitely not a bad thing, though. It was refreshing to see and hear originality and artistry on stage, especially from the first band of the evening.
Wilson (who I was personally stoked for) was hilarious. They were entertaining; from their witty lyrics in their original songs to their cover of Billy Squire’s “The Stroke” they had the audience engulfed in their energy. Their lyrics are slightly trashy, but nowhere near as crass as the band to follow.
For those who are not in the know, Steel Panther is not a band to take your children or your grandparents to see. Unless they like hearing words that would make Hugh Hefner himself blush, then by all means. They are an acquired taste. If you like trashy humor and making fun of the stereotypical 80s Hair Metal bands, then this is the band for you.
If I had a dollar for every time the word “Fuck” or “Pussy” or “Blow Job” was used, I would be rich. While I understand their personas are part of the job, their banter has not aged well and can come across as highly offensive to everyone.
