Ash Costello and her friends in New Year’s Day ripped into the Goodyear Theatre in Akron, Ohio, on Tuesday, October 3, 2017. I think it’s safe to say that the place will never be the same. Supporting Starset and Halestorm on their Halloween Scream Tour, New Year’s Day quite literally kicked ass and took names.
Their seven-song set was an absolutely grinding gift to the metal gods. Ash, Nikki Misery (guitar), Jeremy Valentyne (guitar), Frankie Sil (bass), and Joshua Ingram (drums) mesmerized the audience, while their larger than life sound filled the theatre. If an artist could get a gold medal in crowd engagement, Ash Costello would have a neck full. Egging on the audience to get up on their feet, ordering them to scream and sing along with her, Ash commanded the stage in a way only she can. More than once she offered their performance, and the crowd’s enthusiasm, to the metal gods, and it’s safe to say that the gods were pleased. She even said so herself, and frankly, I think she’d be the first to know!
Not to be outdone by their front-woman, the rest of the band did exactly what they came to do – leave the crowd begging for more. The strings sung out while the drums drove the music forward. At times, they seemed to go a little quicker than they’d anticipated. However, they regrouped and came back together beautifully. It was apparent that they’re passionate about perfecting their craft and bringing their best to the stage. Their passion and drive is what captivates the crowds, while their high energy set and pulsing sound is what keeps people coming back for more.
On a personal note, after their set, Ash spent some time greeting fans who had come from far and wide to meet her. She was as gracious and generous as anyone I have ever witnessed. She took photos, talked tattoos, gave hugs, and greeted each fan with a smile and a “thank you so much for coming out.” To see her give those personal touches to everyone who wanted to meet her was something special for sure. Moments like those often get lost in the shuffle of the night. Being able to witness the fans coming away with a moment just for them made my little black punk rock heart grow a smidge in size. Ash Costello is a true metal goddess in every sense of the word.
New Year’s Day is rounding out this tour with Starset and Halestorm for the next few weeks, while also stopping in at Aftershock Festival on October 22nd. Don’t miss the chance to see them live!
