P!nk performed in Portland Tuesday night in what can only be described as a truly incredible spectacle. During her previous tour, The Truth About Love, P!nk performed acrobatics throughout her performance all while singing hits from The Truth About Love and her former works. So, for Beautiful Trauma, how would this stunning Grammy award winning performance artist take it to the next level? Was it even possible?
At Portland’s Moda Center, the answer became clear. Seemingly, there is nothing that P!nk can’t do. With an enormous pink curtain still in place hiding away the stage, a musician with a recorder played a underwhelming version of the 20th Century Fox theme song and with that out of the way, the curtain dropped.
P!nk made her entrance forty feet above the stage dangling precariously from an enormous chandelier while singing the ever-so-appropriate “Get This Party Started.” Attached to the ceiling of Portland’s Moda Center on a bungee harness, she bounced from the stage to the chandelier and back without missing a beat. But for some of the acrobatics throughout the show (which was a perfect blend of Cirque Du Soleil and truly stunning musical performance) P!nk would forego the safety harnesses, simply trusting in the grip of another dancer while soaring above the crowd. Excuse me for rambling, did I mention that there were acrobatics?
There were songs too. In what would turn out to be a 21 song extravaganza, exactly seven of those songs were from the Beautiful Trauma album. A myriad of emotions would play out during the show; Happiness, Love, Passion, Anger, and Humor… Speaking of humor, during the performance of “Revenge” from the latest album, rapper Eminem would join P!nk on stage in the form of a 35 foot tall inflatable effigy which P!nk would end up assaulting through the creative use of the bungee harness of course.
Okay, so we’ve covered acrobatics, and touched on music for a bit, but the visuals. Wow, the visuals. The stage was set up in a heart shape, apex toward the arena, with a motorized catwalk dividing the heart in half. This helped facilitate two pit sections where fans could interact with P!nk and be up close and personal for the whole of the performance. Behind the stage was an enormous LED display, while above the stage was enough lighting firepower to deck out an average suburban subdivison for an award winning christmas display. Midway through the set, just before P!nk and her team performed “Try”, the stage was transformed into a Sleepy Hollowesque theme with wicked trees and brambles framing the entire rear display. The dancers had all donned appropriate costumes befitting the theme and the performance was simply captivating. Sadly, there aren’t awards given for this sort of thing, but P!nk and her team of dancers, lighting technicians, costumers, and instrumentalists just won all the things.
The Beautiful Trauma tour was recently extended and will be playing dates well into 2019, including a return to Portland in the spring of next year. And this performance is every bit the awe-inspiring event you would expect from a seasoned artist like P!nk. For as long as P!nk is on the road sharing her songs and messages of equality, hope, and humanity, we’ll be there to share it with you.
