Papa and the Ghouls of Ghost preach to the faithless at the Midland TheatreGhost

On Friday, September 30th the Popestar Tour came through Kansas City.  Although this was the 3rd time in under a year that Ghost has played in the area you would have had no clue as two separate lines of patrons were waiting to hear the sermon delivered by Papa Emeritus III.  Looking through the sea of people waiting for the show to begin there were countless Nameless Ghoul masks and even a guy completely decked out in full Papa regalia.  Honestly it could have been Papa Emeritus III and we would have never known.  As the house lights came down and the daunting entrance music came on the packed house of the Midland raged, ready to hear the gospel that was about to be given.  The Nameless Ghouls took to the stage and Papa Emeritus III made his entrance rising from under the stage.   As the first bars of “Square Hammer” hit the crowd everyone was in tune with the music and it flowed over the venue.  Next up was a favorite of the faithless as everyone sang along to “From The Pinnacle To The Pit”. As the night moved on Ghost continued to preach to the masses with “Circle”, “Body & Blood” and of course a visit from the Sisters of Sin before closing the sermon with “Monstrance Clock”.

After the show I was reading through all the social media post, as I like to do, because I like to see other people’s opinions. Every one that attended the show exclaimed how great it was and replies from others saying they did not get what the big deal is. All of the people that did not understand had never seen them live.  Here is the deal folks, Ghost is chock-full of killer musicians and yes Papa Emeritus III has a voice that is all his own. You have to see this band live because the radio does not do them justice.  I kept using the word “sermon” to describe the show and that is because it is not just a show.  It has this aura around it that needs to be experienced and the background of the historic Midland Theatre was the perfect setting.  Ghost has this operatic presence about them that gets lost in translation through radio waves.  Even if you don’t get it, go see them live, and you will understand.
