We love bringing some of the most amazing bands on the planet forward and pushing them straight up in your faces. This week is no different. We’ve developed a nasty habit…one that is downright dirty, and just self-indulgent to the core. We have an addiction to PORN – and we intend to slather your reading orifices with as much PORN as we can with our INDIE BAND OF THE WEEK!
Read on to our interview with Philippe Deschemin and discover why YOU TOO might want to practice a little self-love!
I hate asking the most cliche question in the world, but I MUST ! Why/how did you pick the band name PORN?
The Cure, Robert Smith ‘s band, had a big influence on my early career. Our name comes from their album Pornography. I am impressed with his ability to create dark, emotional songs, and happy pop songs too. I love his voice. PORN is a strong name, a radical name, and maybe be the best way to express the radicalism of my thoughts. A lot of people hate us because of our name, and not just prude or conservative people. We get a lot of hate from the rock and metal scene because of the name, and we love that.
Excellent. Makes sense now ! So, what’s new in the world of PORN !?
We just released the last part of a Trilogy : Mr. Strangler Trilogy, a three album concept about a fictional serial killer named Mr. Strangler.
That’s awesome ! Tell me more about this trilogy…
In 2017, we released our third album : The Ogre Inside – Act I, the first act of a trilogy based on the same fictional serial character. In 2019, we released the second act of its trilogy: The Darkest of Human Desires – Act II. And just recently on the 7th of March 2020, we came back with the final act : No Monsters in God’s Eyes – Act III.
The Ogre Inside is an album about inner struggle, about dark desires, how society oppresses your will. This is a fight no one can win. The Ogre that devours you from the inside always wins. The album is an invocation, a way to set the Ogre free, embrace your “true” self and allow your darkest desires to express themselves. It’s an incitement to act. The Ogre inside won this inner struggle, giving birth to Mr. Strangler.
In the second opus, Mr. Strangler, by embracing his “true-self “, expresses his dark impulses without limitations and has no boundaries. With his crew, Mr. Strangler commits murders and massacres. He also invites everyone to make a step forward and act, invites you to express your darkest desires and join his death cult. For Mr. Strangler and his team, the Ogre was released. They let the darkest of human desires be: murder.
In this last part, Mr. Strangler’s bloody odyssey comes to an end. He is in jail awaiting execution. This final Act is his testament. Faced with the imminent end of his life, he takes stock of his life and begins a dialogue with his death and enjoins everyone to continue his work… the work of God, because if God exists, everything is his. And even the worst monsters are the children of God. There are no monsters in God’s eyes.
Whoa, that’s A LOT ! Who all worked with you on this massive undertaking ?
I produced the Mr. Strangler Trilogy. I also mixed the three albums. We worked on the mastering of the Act II with Tom Baker (mastered legendary albums like Marilyn Manson’s Antichrist Superstar, NIN’s Downward Spiral, Ministry’s Psalm 69 and Rob Zombie’s Hellbilly Deluxe), we worked with Brian Lucey (Magic Garden Studio in Los Angeles) for the mastering of this album. Lucey previously worked with Ghost, Marilyn Manson, Depeche Mode, Arctic Monkeys, Royal Blood…
Also, we are releasing these days some remixes of the Act III by Combichrist, Stabbing Westward, Orgy, Chris Vrenna (NIN), The Anix… Such great bands. We are so glad and proud to have them !
AND we are working on new trilogy: a sequel to the Mr. Strangler Trilogy. We are working with Chris Vrenna from NIN. The man is so talented and experienced! It’s a honor to work with such musician.
That’s a lot of muscle power behind your music. What do you call your musical style ?
We call our musical style Murder Rock.
Sounds completely appropriate. You all seem to have it together pretty tightly. Do you get nervous before a performance ?
Always! But it’s a good nervosity. Nervosity keeps you more focused. It’s not that level of nervosity that paralyses you. Maybe when we are no longer nervous, it will be the time to stop, because that means we dont give a fuck about it anymore…
Fair enough! Do you have a band website ?
We had. Not now… these days it’s all about social network: Facebook, Intagram, Youtube… Sometimes people told us that it’s difficult to find us on the internet and to be honest it’s one of the most stupid things to say… We are a band, so if you look for a band, just look on a musical streaming service : Spotify, Apple music…
Again, fair enough. What do you feel the biggest obstacles for a band are?
Easy answer : themselves.
Short and to the point. I like it! Where do you see yourselves within the next three years?
Our biggest audience is in the U.S. We are trying to create more connections with an agent with the purpose of building a U.S. tour.
And of course, the new trilogy : A sequel to Mr. Strangler’s Trilogy ! The first album is to be released in 2021 !
Those are lofty and COMPLETELY achievable! What are your long time career goals ?
To write an album that becomes a classic.
Again – wonderful goals. How can we put your music in our ears?
On our bandcamp. Catch us on tour also ! We do have physical distribution in Europe and the U.S. but nowadays people order directly from the band.
