First, let me start by saying… you Ghost fans are crazy. The rest of you, well, you should become Ghost fans. At Portland, Oregon’s Moda Center, I talked with fans from all over the world that came just to see Ghost in Portland. One fan, from Sacramento; another had come all the way from Korea. And the cosplay was absolutely stageworthy.
Opening up for Ghost on this North American tour titled “The Ultimate Tour Named Death” is Texas rock band Nothing More. Nothing More brought a tremendous amount of energy to Portland’s Theater of the Clouds at the Moda Center. Lead singer Jonny Hawkins covered every inch of the massive stage, even climbing several yards above the stage on his recently updated drum contraption. Nothing More opened up their set with Let ’em Burn and showed Portland why they’re here for the long haul.
When Ghost took the stage and the curtain dropped, the venue erupted. On the massive stage, nameless ghouls played the opening riffs of Ashes off their 2018 album Prequelle. When Cardinal Copia emerged from the right side of the stage, the already animated crowd became even more electrified.
Ghost went on to play eighteen more songs before taking a brief break. They closed out the night in Portland with the encore Square Hammer. Costume changes, pyrotechnics, fog and confetti. Pretty much every conceivable tool was employed in a visual spectacle you’d expect from a band that was awarded the Grammy award for “Best Metal Performance.” Since Portland was pretty early in their tour, there will be plenty of opportunities to catch Ghost in cities all across the country.
