Say hello to Sydonia, your new favorite Australian rock band. Randy Blythe loves em, so it’s time you did too. It’s been a few years since Australian rockers Sydonia released their debut Given to Destroyers. I remember hearing a new song years ago and thinking it was the shit. I finally got my hands on their latest release Reality Kicks opening with what I can only describe as a cross between Muse and Silverchair, the track “Here”. The drums and bass guitars roll together like a distant thunderstorm, gathering power and atmosphere until the powerful chorus of “I know we want it, but do we need it”. A comment on modern consumerism? Who knows, all I know is that I certainly want more of Sydonia and I DO need it. This record just gathers strength as it thrusts forward.

It’s as if the band became more and more comfortable and creative as the recording went on. There’s power on every track here and you won’t leave this record broken hearted. Sydonia put love, care and thought into each track on Reality Kicks. The guitar tones are aggressive throughout and Dana’s vocals walk a line between King Buzzo (Melvins) and Daniel John’s of Australias’ Silverchair. He can scream too though boy but you never feel as if he is one of these try hard singer trying to encompass all elements of rock to gain a higher appeal level. It all sounds natural and beautifully put together.
And I guess that’s one of the main appeals to Sydonia for me, they are naturally good at what they do and there is no care for genre. They don’t hide behind over production or rely on programmed drums and keyboard lines. What’s recorded is what you are gonna hear live.
Lets look at some of the tracks on Reality Kicks. Every song stands out in its own way but there are a few that are jusy ahead of the pack. “Shame” sees Sydonia at their melodic and riffy best. The melody of the verses is simply sublime and the way it flows in and out of the sections of the song is near genius.
“Drag You Out” has a very 90’s rock feel to it. This, isn’t a bad at all. It is reminiscent of 90’s Australian rock, back when we had great rock on the radio at prime time, not hidden away at the darkest hours.
“Elbow” is a showcase of heavy riffs and melodious melodies. There is some outstandingly immaculate musicianship on show here. Other standouts include The pure pounding that is “Words”, the beautifully crafted “Crash”, the drum solo of “Bateria” and the unbelievable ending in “C13”. Reality Kicks is an outstanding contribution to the already great Australian rock scene, with international appeal and international quality songs here’s hoping Sydonia reach the heights they deserve. Catch them on tour with Helm and Red Bee this month!
