Interview: Singer/Songwriter MVSSIE; New Song "Monsters Under My Bed" Out Now!

Sacramento, California singer/songwriter MVSSIE released her newest single titled “Monsters Under My Bed” to all digital outlets. The single was produced by Kevin “Thrasher” Gruft (Escape the Fate).

“Two words: real. life.
Life is messy and beautiful but there aren’t enough artists talking about it. Massie creates music to connect people through real life experiences. She opens a dialogue about the things no one wants to talk about: struggle, heartbreak, anxiety, pressure, self confidence, worth, and even love, excitement, well-being, comfort, and recovery.
Music has always been therapy for Massie, through her darkest hours and her most incredible life experiences. Massie hopes to make people FEEL something by capturing those real life emotions and experiences in her music” says Mvssie.

She continues, “I think we have all been in a place where we don’t want to face reality. We don’t want to make a decision because we are afraid of what the consequences might be. I wanted to capture that anxiety in a simple and raw way anyone could relate to. How I pictured that anxiety was being a little kid, scared of monsters under my bed because who hasn’t had that overwhelming fear. Unless you’re a fucking psychopath.”

Mvssie is a singer/ songwriter from Sacramento, CA. Hailing from a diverse background of musical endeavors, she is gifted with a wide vocal range, from smooth airy melodies to driving edgy choruses. Since she was 10 years of age, she has been writing her own songs in relation to life events and emotion.

Throughout her music journey she has worked with Thrasher, who has engineered for artists such as, Travis Barker, Machine Gun Kelly, jxdn, and more. In addition to working with Thrasher, she has worked with Earl Cohen, a Grammy award winning producer in New York, Brian Grider and Misha Hercules, based in Los Angeles.

MVSSIE took some time out of her day to answer a few questions for us here at Rockrevolt Magazine

Do you have a band website? Why or why not? Do you have a Facebook or Twitter? Do you use Bandcamp, Spotify or SoundCloud to share your music?

My website is www.mvssie.com for access to all of my social media, videos, and song links. I have all of my music on Spotify as Massie.

What’s your outlook on the record industry today?

I would say that the record industry today, like all things, has it’s pros and cons but it is amazing to see how much freedom there is these days. Also, how limitless the opportunities are, how many genres there are, and how many small artists are making a name. It seems a lot more motivating and hopeful for all artists.

What’s the best and worst thing about playing clubs?

I think the best thing about playing a club is that it feels more personal and there’s more of an ability to connect with people. The worst thing, I would say, is how it might limit the crowd or how many tickets you can sell.

What are your long-term career goals?

In a more literal sense, I know I was meant to perform so my long term goal would definitely be to sign to a label and tour. However, my main goal has always been to get my music to the people who need to hear it and make a living doing what I love.

Are you looking for an independent label deal or a major label deal? (Why?)

I am open to both an independent label deal and a major label deal. Just depends on what I feel is right for me if the opportunity presents itself!

What type of recording process did you use? Who produced your recording?

Usually I start with a line or concept I think is catchy and write a melody and lyrics that go with that concept. Then, I have a producer write an instrumental to what I have written and record and produce vocals. My most recent song ‘Monsters Under My Bed’ was produced by Kevin “Thrasher” Gruft! He was awesome to work with!

How does music affect you and the world around you?

Music has always been a therapy for me. Not just listening, but creating. It’s gotten me through some really difficult things in my life. I have always had a way of making music that people really connect to and feel. I hope to have the same affect on other people through music that it does on me. Throughout my music journey I have been able to bring healing and peace to families affected by the devastating Route 91 mass shooting in Las Vegas, which has been the most rewarding thing I could ever receive from making music. Making music is not just for me, I want to keep creating for the people I could have an impact on.

Which famous musicians do you admire? Why?

My biggest inspiration would have to be MODSUN. He has this brilliant way of pulling an emotion from you through his music, which is exactly what I hope to do. He is so raw and real and it shows through everything he does. I think that is true talent! I have so much respect for his career and his story.

What are your fondest musical memories? In your house? In your neighborhood or town?

I think my fondest memory would be recording the very first song I ever wrote for my great grandpa who had passed away. I will always cherish that memory of recording for the first time in my childhood home with my mom’s band, singing about my favorite person who gave me wings in my music.

How did you form?

I was in a rock band for a long time before I went solo with my manager, Chad Bouck with We Are Music Management. He has opened a lot of doors for me since then, but the pop music I was making wasn’t what I was passionate about and that showed in what I was creating. We both came to the agreement to rebrand and go back to my roots and alternative pop rock was the way to go!
